Toasting to end a successful launch

The Launch of the Global Health Research Initiative.

On Monday, November 19th, 2001 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Ottawa, Dr. Alan Bernstein, President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR); Dr. Maureen O'Neil, President of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC); Dr. Munir Sheikh, Associate Deputy Minister of Health Canada (HC); and Dr. Charles Basset, Senior Vice President of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) came together to officially launch the Global Health Research Initiative.

The Global Health Research Initiative is a collaborative effort between CIHR, CIDA, IDRC, and HC, aimed at coordinating and building Canada's global health research activities. Many other stakeholders and friends from different parts of Canada and the world, including many members of the Coalition for Global Health Research, came to join us in promoting this special initiative. The event was very successful, with the numbers of those attending the launch jumping from an expected 50 people, to well over 100 people attending the event that evening.

Joining the partner organizations at the podium were Allan Ronald (champion for the Coalition of Global Health Research); Janet Hatcher-Roberts (Executive Director, CSIH - conference host); and David Brandling-Bennett (Deputy Director, Pan-American Health Organization). The audience responded enthusiastically to the speeches and to the initiative. The launch ended with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU), formalizing the government agencies and department commitment to collaborate in advancing global health research.

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to offer a special thanks to the Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH), the organizers of the Canadian Conference of International Health (CCIH), for their efforts in making the launch of the Global Health Research Initiative a successful one.
