Throughout history, the media has always informed the general public about current events; however, the media tends to hold their information to obtain a grasp over society. The goal of the media is to capture their audience's attention and to keep them coming back for more. Individuals are addicted to news that is compelling, saddening and tragic; therefore, media thrives on stories that instill fear in the public.
The coverage of the Washington sniper was exactly the type of news story that is desired by the media and their attentive audience. The constant updates and warnings made the public depend on the news which is what the media craves. The media takes the information and inflates it into a national crisis. The unending coverage fills the viewers mind and drives them to search for more information. The media becomes a necessity and uses the opportunity to inflict their views on the public. Because of media coverage, control over the public is inevitable. The goal of the media has been successful in grasping the public and capturing the nation's attention!
