Head in the clouds, feet in the water

September 2003

Does that sound like you?

Many jobs are available in the scientific and technological fields with the federal Public Service. In fact, there are numerous opportunities right now and the departments are hiring science graduates to fill some fascinating jobs in various fields: physics, chemistry, geology, atmospheric sciences, hydrology, mathematics, health, biology, etc.

Environment Canada is the leader in science and technology employment opportunities and has a number of specialized sectors in interesting areas. For example, the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) issues weather reports and monitors water levels, air quality and ice. MSC employees are atmospheric science or hydrology specialists.

Research is an integral part of Environment Canada's activities at its various research centres. These include the National Wildlife Research Centre , which studies some wildlife species (migratory birds, endangered species, etc.), the St. Lawrence Centre ,which focusses on St. Lawrence River ecosystems, the National Water Research Institute, which studies the most important water sources in the country, and the Environmental Technology Centre.

Also, Environment Canada is not the only department hiring specialized resources in the science and technology fields. Health Canada is hiring researchers and analysts. Natural Resources Canada is recruiting geologists and National Defence is seeking engineers, medical staff and technicians in a number of fields. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada is looking to scientists for its specific environmental analysis needs and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency needs biology, animal health and food safety specialists.

Remember that there is a single address for applying for all these types of jobs: the Public Service Commission site, with one exception. If you are interested in a job with National Defence, you should contact your local recruiting centre. Obviously, science and technology graduates have a lot of choice in terms of career opportunities!
