11 Tips to Survive College for the Frosh

September 2004
By Sarah

Books Starting college has many challenges and great experiences that will last a lifetime, not to mention the opportunity of getting a great education. So, as you prepare to start college, here are some good tips to help you survive.

  1. Network: get to know your teachers and fellow students. Form study groups with at least one or two people from each class.

  2. Study: you need to study 2 hours per 1 hour in class. Study during the day, not at night, because you'll be more alert. Always remember to study the hardest subjects first.
  3. Never schedule back-to-back classes: the best time to review is before and right after class.
  4. Prioritize: Balance out your social and academic life. Dawn, a 2nd year student at Lambton College, says, "You have to balance a social life and your school work. If you work too much, you won?t have the experiences that college is about."
  5. Get involved: Dawn also says, "Join clubs or sports or something, where you can meet new people with the same interests as you."
  6. Be good to yourself: eat well, get rest and don't pull allnighters.
  7. Stay calm: don't stress at school. Samantha, a 2nd year student at MUN, says, "Don't psych yourself out. Sure, it's gonna be different from high school, and it does take some getting used to, but if you get too worked up about it, you're gonna mess up your first few weeks. Just take a deep breath and say, "I can do this!" Once you get into the swing of things, you'll be fine."
  8. Make the most of your school's resources: there are tutors available and teachers are willing to help you. Take advantage of the books and videos available in the campus libraries.
  9. Do all of the assignments, even the reading ones: read ahead to prepare yourself for class.
  10. Make a schedule and stick to it: Andrea, a 4th year student at WCBC in Winnipeg, says, "Even though you're not in class as much as you were in high school, you still have as much, if not more, work to do. You still need to work consistently to get everything done.
  11. GO TO CLASS!!!: Especially on the first day, miss a day, miss a lot. Cheryl, a future nursing student, says, "Be on time, pay attention, and DO NOT GET SICK!!!"
