Decisions about post secondary!

September 2004
By: Gina

This article is a reflection into my last year of high school and the process of choosing what to do after high school was over. This will offer students who were in my position a little advice and a look into what they'll have to be going through.

Choices that you'll make...

I have finished my four years of high school, and I have a diploma in my hand. Now what? Well, that was a question a lot of people in my position were asking themselves. I was a grade 12 student, with tough choices ahead of me. Along with worrying about doing well in my classes of my ?most important year of schooling ever?, I had to choose what I wanted to do after my last assignment, and my last textbook was handed in. The realization of having to make choices for the future grew and haunted me from the minute I stepped back into the classroom of my last year of high school.

At first I panicked. I was overwhelmed by all the options I was faced with. If I wanted to go to university, which one would I go to? Stay at home or move out to residence? Or if I wanted to go to college? Take a year off? Go back to high school for one more year? This was a hard decision, but a decision had to be made!

I did some thinking about what I wanted to do in the future. I looked at my strengths and most importantly my interests. I went to the University and College fair held annually at the Metro Convention Centre and collected a promotional book from every university and college there. I looked at all the books and book marked each program that interested me. Also, I took advantage of the travelling university seminars that were offered at my school. Representatives from different universities came and talked about their universities and answered any questions asked. I was motivated to go a bit more because these seminars were held during class time. I asked my friends and family for any advice if they had any and took it into consideration when making my final decisions.

If you're nearing grade 12, and are about to be faced with these decisions. Make sure you utilize all your resources. Ask people who have been in your position, look on websites, and ask your guidance counsellors questions, because you can never know too much. Also, whether you choose to move on to post-secondary education or not. Make sure what you're doing is something you really want to be doing. Because the choices you're making now will be choices you're making in the future. Choose wisely and don't worry!
