Going Away to University for the First Time

September 2004
By: Lori

Going to university to many can be seen as the first chance to be out on your own and in one way freedom. This is true whether a person goes to school in a different province or goes to school twenty minutes away. University is a different way of life. For me I had decided I had enough of the small town life and moved an eight-hour drive away from my home to attend school. The first few months of living away from home was a unique experience that I would not trade for anything in the world.

The first year is one of the toughest years; many adjustments have to be made. You are really thrusted into a new world. If you can be one of the ones who survive your first year, the rest of university is a lot easier. University is a different world where many temptations are there to distract you from the reason you were originally there. For the first time in your education there were no teachers to make sure that your project is in, there are no parents around to tell you to go to class, and you're indeed on your own to do these things. There are many websites available to check out before going to university, one of the most important being the website of the school you will be attending. Doing a simple search on google can bring up a lot of message boards and articles directed at the first year university student. A big help can be if you know someone who has recently been to university who can tell you what to expect. In the end, no webpage or person can tell you exactly what university is going to be like as it is a unique experience.
