Why is it so hard for a high school student to find a summer job?

September 2004
By: Émilie

High school can be a hard time for students, but the pressure to get a summer job can be almost unbearable. Read on to find out how you can keep busy, help others and improve your resume and you don't need a summer job to do this.

Do you remember as a high school student trying to find a summer job? How hard was it for you to actually find one? Whether you wanted one so you could buy a car, or keep your car running, having money to spend in the school year, or simply you had no attention on having one it was your parent's idea and they wanted you out of the house and out of their hair for the summer. We all have different motives for getting a summer job but everyone has a purpose that summer, and that was to work.

Now whether we actually could get a job that summer, was a different subject altogether. Even when you put your resume in early June or even May, there's still going to be a pile more of people applying for the same job before you. And there's nothing worse then applying for a job which you're qualified for and maybe a college student takes the job before you even if you were much more qualified. The reason they probably got it was either, their availability was better then yours or they could start working even sooner or quite possibly they could have connections that you don't have.

So, it's July and you don't have a job. Instead of moping around being bored and doing nothing, there's a lot you can do to help people. It keeps you busy, is rewarding and adds to your resume. Any guesses?

You can volunteer. The following websites are volunteering information. So before you decide that this summer is going to be boring, check out a few of these websites.

For starters there's: www.youth.gc.ca which has info for everything. For general volunteering there's: http://www.volunteer.ca/index-eng.php Find information on statistics and resources about volunteering across Canada. Also find links to other On-Line resources visit: www.givingandvolunteering.ca Don't forget to check out any museums and other places that usually require donations like the Salvation Army or the Cancer Society.
