Smoking

December 3, 2002
by Anonymous - Encounters with Canada

CigaretteEveryday you see someone smoking outside a building or inside a restaurant. Smoking is all around us wherever we go. As teens, we are introduced to new grown-up decisions everyday and smoking is what parents, teachers and the government is most worried about.

Every teenager has made the decision to smoke or not to smoke. It is their decision whether anyone likes it or not. Parents can put their foot down, if they choose to and teachers can only help to an extent. But now the government has stepped in to take over our smoking lives. They are raising cigarette prices and making no-smoking policies across Canada.

In the past couple of months, I have watched teens and adults closely and I have found that very little of the teen and adult population has stopped. Some people say they enjoy smoking and that is their choice, not the governments'. It do think it's fair to make some places smoke-free, such as where children are or where people may have allergies. However, this should be done to an extent.

I am a teen smoker and believe and support whatever is good for children and adults around me. The government does these things to get money, not to do what is good for our country and our future. As long as there is such a thing as smoking, I will do it until I don't want to anymore and that is my choice.
