Quebec pilot project to evaluate innovative health care initiative receives funding

Laval - Federal Public Works and Government Services Minister Alfonso Gagliano and Raymonde Folco, M.P. for Laval West, today announced, on behalf of Health Minister Allan Rock, funding for a pilot project relating to health services integration. The project will be carried out in Laval, Quebec, and will be funded through the Health Transition Fund.

The objective of the project is to evaluate an innovative health care initiative which will pilot test an integrated approach to geriatric, respiratory and cancer care services at Laval regional outpatient hospital.

"This evaluation project will help determine how integrating a number of specific health care services can contribute to the modernization of the health care system and help strengthen it in the long term," Mr. Rock said. "The project will generate information that will give all governments, both in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada, insights into more effective ways of delivering health care."

The project announced today was reviewed and recommended by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec in accordance with Quebec priorities. The project will receive funding of $527,000 through the federal Health Transition Fund (HTF). This is in addition to the $18.8 million for the 28 projects announced in Quebec since July 1998 under the HTF.

The Health Transition Fund was established by the federal government in 1997 in response to a recommendation by the National Forum on Health. It is designed to generate information and evidence on the organization, funding and delivery of health care services in four priority areas – home care, pharmacare, primary care and integrated service delivery.

Evaluation results of projects will be shared among all provinces and territories. The 0fund provides $30 million to national level projects and $120 million to provincial and territorial projects allocated on a per capita basis.
