Government announces funding for project in connection with International Year of Older Persons

Montreal - Yvon Charbonneau, M.P. for Anjou-Rivière-des-Prairies, and Denis Coderre, M.P. for Bourassa, on behalf of Health Minister Allan Rock, today announced funding for the project Partenaires d'hier à demain which is being undertaken by the Association québécoise de défense des droits des personnees retraitées et préretraitées (AQDR) of Rivière-des-Prairies. Part of the Government of Canada's support for the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP), the project promotes recognition of the important role that seniors play in our society. Canada's theme for IYOP is 'Canada, a society for all ages'.

As well as increasing recognition of contributions made by seniors, the project aims to modify the image that people have of aging, and to promote greater mutual respect between seniors and young people. Throughout the International Year of Older Persons, the AQDR will hold some fifteen events designed to bring young people and seniors closer together, while drawing attention to the contribution that seniors make to local development. In addition, feature articles on seniors, the organizations that serve them and intergenerational activities will be published twice monthly in local newspapers.

Health Canada will contribute more than $13,000 to the project under the Population Health Fund. To support its activities, the AQDR has mobilized many partners in various sectors: education; health and social services; municipal administration; and community organizations. The partners have agreed to provide human, financial and technical resources totalling more than 57 per cent of the project's budget.

This project is one of the 17 initiatives that Health Canada has supported in Quebec to mark the International Year of Older Persons. It was proposed to the Bureau québécois de l'Année internationale des personnes âgées (BQAIPA, Quebec bureau for IYOP), within the framework of a joint federal/provincial invitation for projects led by the federal government last fall.
