Federal government announces the funding of four health care projects

Montreal - Sheila Finestone, Member of Parliament for Mount Royal, today announced on behalf of Allan Rock, Minister of Health, funding for four pilot projects dealing with integrated health service delivery practices and services.

"These projects employ innovative methods that will help modernize the health care system and strengthen it in the long term," Mr. Rock stated. "Their evaluation will generate information that will give all governments, both in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada, more effective ways of delivering health care."

Specifically, the four projects will focus on multidisciplinary mental health consultation services for the various cultural communities in the Montreal area, the consultation process between attending physicians and geriatric psychiatrists, coordination of care given to elderly patients after they have been seen in an emergency department, and coordination of diabetic patient care.

The projects, totalling $1.9 million provided by the Health Transition Fund (HTF), will be carried out in Quebec. They were recommended by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec, according to Quebec priorities. Today's financial commitment is in addition to the $25.5 million for 31 projects announced in Quebec since July 1998 as part of HTF.

The Health Transition Fund was established by the federal government in 1997 in response to a recommendation by the National Forum on Health. The fund provides $30 million to national level projects, and $120 million to provincial and territorial projects allocated on a per-capita basis. It is designed to gather information on the organization, funding and delivery of health care services in the priority areas of home care, pharmacare, primary care reform and integrated service delivery.

Evaluation results of projects are shared with all provinces and territories.
