Health Minister launches Federal Guide to Programs and Services for Children and Youth

Ottawa - Health Minister Allan Rock launched the 1999 edition of the Guide to Federal Programs and Services for Children and Youth.

"I am pleased to announce the second edition of this valuable resource," said Minister Rock. "The growing number of programs related to children and youth and the increased investment in child-related initiatives announced in the 1999 Federal Budget reflect the government's commitment to achieving improved developmental outcomes for Canada's children."

"While families have the primary responsibility to nurture their children, it is comforting to know that they are not alone in this important undertaking." said Ethel Blondin-Andrew, Secretary of State for Children and Youth. "I am therefore proud of the initiative taken by Health Canada in informing Canadians about the federal programs and services related to children and youth."

An update of the 1997 edition, the Guide is a unique reference that regroups federal programs and services related to children and youth. Most departments and agencies offer programs and services aimed at promoting and enhancing the health and well-being of Canada's children. Intended for parents, caregivers, organizations, educational institutions, and agencies working with young people, the Guide is organized thematically with topics such as health, families and research. Each entry lists program objectives and contacts for further information.

The Guide to Federal Programs and Services for Children and Youth is available free of charge in print format by calling (613) 957-3436 and on the Internet on Health Canada's Next link will open in a new window Childhood and Youth Web site. The Guide is also available in alternative formats upon request.
