Government launches recruitment process for Board of Directors of the Assisted Human Reproduction Agency of Canada

OTTAWA - Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh today announced the launch of a national recruitment process to seek candidates for the board of directors to manage the Assisted Human Reproduction Agency of Canada. As previously announced on May 9, 2005, the Agency will be established in January 2006 to protect the health and dignity of Canadians who use assisted reproduction procedures. It will also help to ensure that practices in this area are consistent with ethical principles.

The Government is seeking candidates for President, Chairperson and up to 11 additional members of the board of directors.

"We are launching an open, fair and transparent recruitment process to attract excellent candidates for these positions on the board of directors," said Minister Dosanjh. "We are looking for candidates who will represent a diversity of interests involved in assisted human reproduction."

The Agency will be responsible for, among other things, licensing, inspection and enforcement related to activities controlled under the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, which became law in March 2004. It will operate separately from Health Canada, reporting to Parliament through the federal Minister of Health. The Agency will be based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

On June 22, public notices regarding recruitment were placed in various newspapers across the country, in selected national and international journals, and in the June 25 issue of the Canada Gazette.

The positions require varying levels of university education, or for members of the Board, a combination of equivalent education and experience in a field related to health sciences, ethics, law, social services or public administration. There are also varying requirements for experience at the executive level, as well as experience working in a field related to assisted human reproduction, as listed above, including social sciences (such as women's and children's health). Subject to the conflict of interest requirement in the Act, all Canadians with such experience or expertise can seek positions on the board.

The announcement of the appointments to the board will follow the establishment of the Agency, early in 2006.
