Health Canada consults on proposed regulations
OTTAWA - Health Minister David Dingwall reiterated today in the House of Commons the steps his department is taking with regard to the proposed amendment to the Food and Drug Regulations on raw milk cheese that was published in the Canada Gazette, Part I on March 30, 1996. Health Canada has invited raw milk cheese manufacturers and importers to discuss and submit options regarding the proposed regulatory change.
These consultations with producers and manufacturers are taking place across the country beginning this week and through to late May.
In addition, a Scientific Expert Advisory Committee appointed by Health Canada will review the comments received from stakeholders and will make recommendations to the department, following the end of the consultation period, June 13, 1996.
Officials from Health Canada are also attending, as observers, consultation sessions being held by the ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) and by the Dairy Farmers of Canada.
Minister Dingwall stated that he trusts that the consultation period will help identify a solution that addresses the concerns of consumers, manufacturers and importers of raw milk cheese, while protecting the health and safety of Canadians. The department will consider all proposed options. Some of these could include labelling of cheese products or new manufacturing processes such as microfiltration.
