Health Minister invites Canadians to celebrate National Child Day

OTTAWA - Health Minister David Dingwall invited all Canadians to celebrate children and youth today.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child aims to ensure the survival, protection, development and participation rights for all children. It was ratified by Canada in 1991. "What the Convention says is that children need an environment that will allow them to grow to their full potential. We all have a role to play to make sure this happens," said Mr. Dingwall.

"As we celebrate this special day with our children, we reflect on their needs and think of ways to improve their well-being. We can do this in our homes, in schools, in childcare centres, and in various workplaces in our communities. Our priority remains to ensure that we continue to contribute to the health of Canada's children by providing safe, healthy and supportive environments for them," added Mr. Dingwall.

The Government of Canada designated November 20 as National Child Day to commemorate two historic United Nations events: the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959 and the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989.
