Minister McLellan announces new member of CIHR Governing Council

OTTAWA - The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Health, today announced the appointment of Dr. Robert S. Sheldon to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR ) Governing Council.

"I am pleased to congratulate Dr. Sheldon on his appointment to CIHR's
Governing Council," said Minister McLellan. "His vast experience in clinical health research and his commitment to bettering the health of all Canadians will be an asset as he joins this outstanding group of individuals."

Dr. Robert Sheldon is a distinguished researcher and physician. Over his career he has specialized in Cardiology and arrhythmia disturbances. Dr. Sheldon has an active practice at the Foothills Hospital in Alberta, and he operates a basic and clinical research laboratory dedicated to understanding the causes and treatment of fainting. His lab also studies second-to-second regulation of heartbeats and blood pressure.

CIHR is Canada's premier health research agency and funds over 7,800 researchers from coast to coast. Its objective is to excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge, and to translate this knowledge into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened health care system.

The CIHR Governing Council is comprised of 19 volunteer members that represent a wide spectrum of expertise and experience in health research and policy. Charged with the responsibility of ensuring CIHR works to fulfill its mandate, the Governing Council sets the overall strategic direction, goals and policies of CIHR and its Institutes.

Appointed for three years, members of the Governing Council are selected as individuals rather than as representatives of any particular group or organization.
