Minister McLellan announces new appointment to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse

OTTAWA - Health Minister Anne McLellan today announced the appointment of Beverley Clarke, Chief Executive Officer of Health and Community Services-St. John's Region, Newfoundland and Labrador, to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA).

"Beverley Clarke has had a positive influence on the quality of addictions services in Newfoundland and Labrador over the last 20 years," said Minister McLellan. "The wealth of practical experience and lessons learned that she brings to CCSA's Board of Directors can now benefit all Canadians."

"I am very pleased to welcome Ms. Clarke to the Board," said Chief Barry King, Chair of the CCSA Board. "She is a team player with excellent problem-solving skills and a strong client focus that puts a human face on the problems associated with addictions."

Ms. Clarke has held various senior positions within the Department of Health and Community Services, Newfoundland and Labrador , including Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), Policy and Planning (2000-2002), and ADM of Community Health (1998-2000). Ms. Clarke obtained her Masters of Social Work at Carleton University in Ottawa and was a part-time lecturer at the School of Social Work at Memorial University. She was formerly Director of Addictions Services with the government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Ms. Clarke is currently the provincial representative for Newfoundland and Labrador on the federal-provincial-territorial Performance Indicators Reporting Committee.

The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse was created by an Act of Parliament in 1988 to provide leadership and a national focus for Canada's efforts to reduce or eliminate the harm associated with addictions. The CCSA operates the National Clearinghouse on Substance Abuse, and is recognized for forging partnerships between the health sector and law enforcement, and bridging the gap between policy and research.
