Midland Company Charged With Illegal Importation of Controlled Ozone Depleting Substance
TORONTO--October 10, 2000 - Elcan Optical Technologies/Raytheon of Midland was charged October 4th in the Ontario Court of Justice, Brampton with six charges under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.
It is alleged that the Company illegally imported hydrochlorofuorocarbons (HCFC's), which are controlled under the "Ozone Depleting Substances Regulations". Importers of these products must apply for, and be granted, an authorization by way of a consumption allowance to do so.
The next court appearance for the corporate accused is Friday, November 24th, 2000 in Ontario Court of Justice, Brampton.
Contravention of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act can result in a fine up to a maximum of $300,000 for a first offence.
The charges were laid by Environment Canada after a six month investigation by the Ontario Regional Office of Environment Canada's Environmental Protection Branch.
