Health Research - Investing in Canada's Future 2003-2004

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is dedicated to the maxim that health research will improve Canada's health care system.

This can be done through CIHR's mandated objective to create new knowledge in the field of health research and then translate that knowledge into improved health for all Canadians.

The following document illustrates the extraordinary, proactive, multidisciplinary steps CIHR is taking, thanks to the broad-based approach of its 13 virtual Institutes, to ensure that health research improves the health of Canadians, strengthens Canada's health care system and contributes to a growing knowledge-based economy.

There are segments that explain (i) how CIHR's efforts in health research commercialization align well with the federal government's goals to place Canada among the top nations in the world in terms of R&D; (ii) that CIHR's distribution of grants and awards among Canada's regions are not only increasing but also leading to significant health research breakthroughs; and finally (iii) that CIHR's investments in research on specific diseases are yielding significant health benefits for Canadians and citizens all over the world.

Given that scientists are beginning to understand the molecular underpinnings of disease, we are on the verge of a significant revolution in health research discoveries. As the Canadian government's agency for health research, CIHR will continue to provide leadership and support to more than 8,000 researchers and research teams in every province of Canada.
