Product Safety Laboratory

The Product Safety Laboratory provides information and advice to other laboratories and to industry interested in developing and improving their own testing capacity. Testing and method development are also carried out in order to investigate complaints and to provide input into the development of product safety policies and regulations.

The results of the analyses performed by the Product Safety Laboratory on consumer products are key in the evaluation of potential risks associated with those products. They support the activities of the Product Safety Programme such as the development and update of policies and regulations, and the enforcement of the regulatory requirements.

The Laboratory is divided into three areas: chemistry, mechanical engineering and flammability. The products tested range from children's products to textiles to consumer chemicals. Most tests are performed to verify compliance with requirements set out in the federal Hazardous Products Act. The Product Safety Laboratory is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 17025 laboratory quality standard.
