Upholstered Furniture

Burning cigarettes are one of the most common causes of home fires in this country. Upholstered furniture is one of the most common areas where cigarette-related fires begin.

To address this concern, Health Canada and the Canadian Council of Furniture Manufacturers have established a voluntary industry program to reduce the possibility of upholstered furniture catching fire from cigarettes. This program sets requirements for flame-resistant fabrics, upholstery construction standards, consumer information labelling, and manufacturers' compliance procedures.

Even with this program in place, fires are still possible. Health Canada recommends that consumers be very careful with lit cigarettes, matches, candles and other open sources of flame, and to never leave them unattended.
