Phase 1 - Preparation

Environment Canada (EC) and Health Canada (HC) have undertaken a number of activities in preparation for the Parliamentary Review of CEPA 1999, including:

  • Several processes to collect the views of Canadians affected by CEPA 1999. Departmental officials prepared a "scoping paper" identifying the issues that could benefit from public input. EC and HC conducted web-based consultations and conducted public workshops in six cities across Canada in early 2005 to hear the public's views on issues that they wanted addressed in the review. A summary of what was heard over the course of these workshops is available on this site, as is a summary of what was heard throughout the web-based consultations.
  • Throughout 2003-2004, a cross-section of officials from EC and HC examined the activities undertaken during the last Parliamentary Review of CEPA (1988) to generate and apply lessons learned.
  • Independent evaluations of the implementation of the Act were commissioned by EC and HC. EC's evaluation is available online.
