New Substances Program Assessments of Four Polyfluorinated Telomer Based Substances

New Documentation Available

In 2004, Health Canada and Environment Canada assessed four fluorotelomer based substances under the New Substances provisions of CEPA 1999. The Departments suspected these substances of being "toxic" according to section 64 of CEPA 1999, and subsequently subjected them to temporary prohibitions under paragraph 84(1)(b) of CEPA 1999. On June 17, 2006, The Governor in Council published a notice of Action Plan for the Assessment and Management of Perfluorinated Carboxylic Acids and their Precursors to continue the prohibitions on these substances.

In support of the notice to address these substances, the following documents are available to the public:

  1. Original environmental and human health assessment reports (edited to remove confidential business information)
  2. Government response to comments on the assessments
  3. Update to the environmental and human health assessment reports, and
  4. Action Plan to address perfluorinated carboxylic acids and their precursors.
