Provincial Addiction Services: Programs

Assessment and Referral
Regional addictions assessments are the point of entry to addiction services. Assessments are provided by addictions nurses and counsellors to determine the presence of a dependency; the degree of dependency; and recommendations for treatment. Assessment is often the key stage to beginning successful treatment and recovery.

Inpatient Detoxification
Specialized inpatient detoxification services are offered at the Provincial Addictions Centre. Clients may be admitted to inpatient services at the provincial facility at any time of the day or night. The length of stay is based on the client's needs. Withdrawal management is provided by an addictionologist and addictions nurses.

Outpatient Detoxification
Outpatient detoxification programs are available in all health regions seven-days-a-week. Clients are admitted to the program based on a comprehensive screening which determines whether they meet the criteria for inpatient services or the criteria to be safely detoxed as an outpatient. Once the client is through the most acute stage of withdrawal, they participate in an education program consisting of six different sessions on topics pertinent to the initial stages of recovery. When clients leave detox, they may receive follow-up calls and contacts for as long as necessary to assist in recovery.

Rehabilitation
The three-week Rehab program is offered to clients who are drug free. The program is offered Monday to Friday for three weeks. Education sessions and group discussions are offered.

After Care
The After Care program is offered to support clients who have completed the Rehab program. The one-hour programs are offered for 24-weeks. The program includes group sessions on topics such as anger and resentment; pressure to use; and coping with daily stressors.

Early Intervention
The 10-hour Pathways early intervention program is offered to adults who are dealing with a consequence of their use or misuse of chemicals, for example an impaired driving conviction, an act of violence, or a parole violation. Clients may or may not be addicted, but require further intervention or education to prevent them from repeating the consequence of their use or abuse.

Family Programs
Family programs assist family and friends to examine how they are affected by their loved one's illness; how they can support themselves; and how they can best participate in their own and their loved one's recovery.

Adolescent Rehabilitation
This is an intensive twelve-week Rehab program for youth aged 12 to 19 years. The program is delivered after school two afternoons per week. Topics covered are adolescent-specific, for example substance abuse education and consequences; peer pressure; and coping mechanisms.

Student Assistance Programs
The Student Assistance Program is offered in the schools in 80 minute sessions. Kids sign up voluntarily without pressure from parents or friends. A maximum of 14 kids participate in two streams: Friendship Group for youth who are living with alcohol or are affected by it, and Harmfully Involved Group for teens who are assessed as being harmfully involved with alcohol or drugs.

Extended Care
Extended care is available for clients who have completed detox and rehab but need more supervised support to regain their health and re-enter society. Programs are available at St. Eleanor's House in Summerside, and Talbot House and Lacey Residence in Charlottetown.
