Pollution Prevention

The federal government believes that pollution prevention (P2) is the most effective means of protecting our environment, eliminating costly waste, and promoting sustainable development. P2 focuses on avoiding the creation of pollutants rather than trying to manage them after they have been created.

Pollution prevention is defined in the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 as:
"The use of processes, practices, materials, products or energy that avoid or minimize the creation of pollutants and waste, and reduce overall risk to human health or the environment."

Refer to the following websites for further information on P2:

Visit the P2 Plans section for information on P2 planning and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.
