The purpose of public opinion research is to identify perceptions within reliable and acceptable statistical margins of accuracy. To that end, the Bank retained an external research firm to conduct a survey of Canadian cash-handling businesses with regard to the methods of payment they accept, their practices with respect to checking notes and training staff to identify counterfeit bank notes, and their awareness of sources of training on bank note security and authentication.
Between 13 and 22 December 2005, a total of 2,000 telephone interviews were conducted across Canada with eligible Canadian businesses. Only the owner or manager of the retail location could participate in the research. The margin of accuracy for the aggregate results is ±2.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
