EXPIRED - CCPA And Governments Of Canada, Ontario And Alberta Memorandum Of Understanding For Environmental Protection Through Action Under CCPA Responsible Care®

Introduction

The original Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association (CCPA) in 1994 expired on December 31, 1998. In addition to the CCPA, this MOU was signed by both Environment Canada and Industry Canada.

A new MOU has been negotiated and signed. The objective of the new MOU, like the previous one, is to reduce the release of chemical substances through voluntary, non-regulatory action under the CCPA Responsible Care® program. This MOU meets the criteria set out in the Environment Canada's Policy on Environmental Performance Agreements , and includes an Annex setting out specific targets and timelines to reduce releases of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Signatories to this MOU include the CCPA, Environment Canada, Health Canada, Industry Canada and the Provinces of Alberta and Ontario. A significant aspect of the new MOU is the active participation of environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGO's), including Pollution Probe, STOP, and members of CCPA's National Advisory Panel, both in the negotiation process and through their membership on the Steering Committee that will implement the Agreement.
