Canadian Biodiversity Information Network

Background

The Canadian Biodiversity Information Network was developed in 1996 to deliver information on the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy and to serve as Canada's national node to the global Clearing House Mechanism (CHM). The goal of CBIN is to increase public awareness about biodiversity and national level implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and to enhance information-sharing with partners and international Parties to the CBD.

CBIN contains biodiversity-related information on a wide range of topics, including:

  1. Canadian activities to implement the CBD and the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy;
  2. Upcoming national and international meetings and events;
  3. What you can do to protect biodiversity;
  4. Reference material;
  5. The Canadian Indigenous Biodiversity Information Network;
  6. Biodiversity News;
  7. Links to relevant organizations;

Canada's national CHM focal point oversees the development of CBIN. Canada is represented on the CHM Informal Advisory Committee (IAC) to help guide and oversee the development of the Mechanism and scientific and technical cooperation.

Each person or organization accessing CBIN can be an information user and/or provider.

Users can browse CBIN by selecting the appropriate menu item on the left, or by using the search functions to find information posted on the site or in the CBIN database.

Information can be submitted for inclusion in the CBIN database by using the "input" function on your left. Each information provider (person or organization) is responsible for inputting, maintaining and updating their information, to ensure that it remains up to date and relevant.

Visit the help section if you encounter difficulty while navigating the site, or use the feedback section if you wish to contact the Biodiversity Convention Office with questions or comments.
