New book showcases CHIRPP databy Sharon Bartholomew, Research Analyst, Bureau of Reproductive and Child Health
"The good news from this book is that the death and hospitalization rates are declining for most types o f injuries to children and youth," comments Catherine McCourt, Director of the Bureau of Reproductive and Child Health. "However, among children and youth younger than 20 years, injuries are still the leading cause of death and account for almost one hospitalization in six. The key to further reducing these rates is understanding the circumstances surrounding these injuries, which is the strength of CHIRPP." The book is a result of a three-year partnership among 22 authors, 49 reviewers, an 11-member editorial board, and the Bureau of Reproductive and Child Health. The project team was led by Ginette Beaulne of the Direction de la santé publique de Montréal-Centre. She explains that the book is "the fruit of a remarkable collaboration between numerous Canadian professionals working in injury prevention. Given our appreciation of interdisciplinary and intersectorial alliances, this work could not have been written any other way." The book emphasizes that all sectors, including transportation, sports and recreation, engineering, agriculture and child welfare, need to have a stake in injury prevention. For the Safety of Canadian Children and Youth contains almost 300 pages of data, analysis, risk factors and preventive measures, and recommendations for research. Sixteen of the 18 chapters deal in detail with a particular type of injury, such as burns, choking or falls, while the remaining chapters provide general overviews. For more information, visit the Bureau of Reproductive and Child Health website at http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hpb/lcdc/brch.
