Welcome to Pemmican Publications

Pemmican Publications Inc. is a Metis cultural and educational publishing house established in 1980 by the Manitoba Metis Federation Inc. as a creative and vocational outlet for the Metis people of Manitoba. Pemmican is the only Metis book publishing house in Canada. Pemmican promotes Metis culture and history through its publications, many of which depict traditional lifestyle, the art of oral storytelling, living in harmony with nature and the environment, and the rich and living heritage of the Metis of the Province of Manitoba. The oral tradition of passing on knowledge from generation to generation comes alive in Pemmican's stories of the special bond between children and their Kokums and Mushoms.

Pemmican thanks our readers for your support throughout the years, without you, success would not be possible.

Publishing specialization

Pemmican Publications objective is 'to promote Metis culture and heritage through the publication of books. This includes;

  • Publishing Manitoba Metis authors and illustrators.
  • Hiring skilled Metis people to run the publishing house and provide professional development to learn the publishing industry.
  • Providing affordable books.

Pemmican continues to fill the gap in Mantioba and Canadian literature with books written by Metis from a Metis perspective. Pemmican publishes books written and illustrated by Metis, First Nationa and Inuit people and also publishes non-Aboriginal writers and illustrators who contribute to the Aboriginal literary base. Pemmican enables first time Metis writers and illustrators to become published who may not otherwise have the opportunity, especially those from the northern and remote communities.
