• We have met our emission target of 1.51 kilograms of NOx per tonne of steel shipped. In 2001, we emitted 0.88 kilograms of NOx per tonne of steel shipped.

2.7

Target:
• Enhance an additional 5,000 square meters by end of 1999.

• We met our commitment to enhance 5,000 square meters of our Hamilton property by greenbelting land within our primary operations (e.g. Heckett's Berm)
• In addition, in 2001 Dofasco enhanced a further 2,400 square meters with greenbelting at our Hamilton facilities. We also installed a 400 meter green screen. A total of 26,347 square meters have been greenbelted since EMA signed.

Participating with Others to Assess Options for Managing the Release of IP/RP

3.1

Meet MISA Targets

YES

• We are meeting all MISA loading limits. In 2001 we failed two toxicity tests. Cause of the failures was identified and the situation corrected.

3.2

Modifications within the Framework of MISA

• We have suggested that MISA regulation be amended to include schedules as an appendix that can be changed to reflect process modifications.

3.3

Participation in Hamilton Harbour RAP

YES

• Dofasco is still active in RAP (i.e., BARC and BAIT) and remains fully committed to removing the Harbour as an Area of concern.

3.4

Address Contaminated Sediments in Dofasco's Boat Slip

YES

• Working with all stakeholders to evaluate options for managing this area of the Harbour. Draft final report has been issued. Further decisions based on this report will be made jointly with MOE and Environment Canada.

3.5

Reduce Spills to Water

YES

• Spills to water were reduced by 82% from 1990 to 2001.

4.1

Target:
60% reduction from 1990 levels by 2000.

• We continue to investigate and implement recycling programs for commercial materials.
• Commercial waste taken to landfill has been reduced by 55% since 1990.

4.2

Investigate Alternatives to Landfill for By-products.

YES

• In 2001 Dofasco was successful in diverting all steelmaking slags from landfill for use in road paving and construction.
• Lead role in golden Horseshoe By-Product Synergy Project identifying opportunities (e.g. iron oxide as cement feedstock).
• Sent 14,250 tonnes of EAF dust to metals recovery facility in 2001. This is up from the 7,800 tonnes in 2000.

4.3

Increase use of Recyclables

YES

• Use of steel scrap is on the increase. Dofasco recycled 1.8 million tonnes of steel in 2001.
• Ladle slag is now being used to build slag dams at the EAF, saving over 2,200 tonnes annually of previously purchased material.
• Used 15,000 tonnes of steelmaking slag fines as a replacement for saleable millscale at our ironmaking operations.

4.5

Target:
• 100% destruction of stored high-level drumrned PCBs by end of 2000.

YES

• Target was met in the first quarter of 1999. In addition to our original commitment, in 2001, Dofasco removed 25 PCB transformers from service and destroyed 36,800 kg of liquid PCBs.

5.2

Implement Recommendations of the Steel Sector Strategic Options

YES

• Focus has been on meeting the recommendations dealing with PAH and benzene emissions. Focus is now on developing dioxin/furan targets for the Steel sector.
• Dofasco has conducted stack testing at the EAF this year in a second round of dioxin/furan testing. Progress is being made on all other SOP recommendations.

Target:
50% reduction in aggregate ARET parameters from 1990 levels by end of 1998.

• We met our target. In 2000, Dofasco achieved a 76% reduction of aggregate releases as measured against our base year of 1990.
• We will continue to use ARET-2 as our primary voluntary mechanism for initiating and tracking our pollution prevention activities.

• Four C of A's involving our primary water treatment plants were consolidated into one.
