Update to the 2002 Canadian Immunization Guide (2003-05-01)

- Message from the -
Assistant Deputy Minister
Population and Public Health Branch, Health Canada

All recommendations by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) on the use of vaccines in Canada are contained in the Canadian Immunization Guide. A readership survey revealed that the Guide ranked as useful or better than other sources of information on immunization.

The Guide will also be available on the Centre for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control (CIDPC) Web site. Updates on NACI's new or revised recommendations are published in the Canada Communicable Disease Report (CCDR), which is also available on the web site.

If you have suggestions or comments on the Guide, we would be pleased to receive them for consideration for the next edition. You can send your comments to: Advisory Committee Secretariat, Immunization and Respiratory Infections Division, Centre for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control, P.L. 0603E1, Tunney's Pasture, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0L2.

Producing such a publication requires considerable dedication and time on the part of those involved. We would like to thank the National Advisory Committee on Immunization; the responsible members of the Biologics and Genetic Therapies Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch, Health Canada; and the Centre for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control, Public Health Agency of Canada, and Health Canada, for producing this Guide.

- Preface -

The sixth edition of the Canadian Immunization Guide contains numerous changes from the 1998 version but attempts to remain user friendly. Every chapter has been thoroughly reviewed and updated as needed. New chapters have been added on varicella, Lyme disease and combined hepatitis A and B vaccines. Both the pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccine chapters have been expanded to include the new conjugate vaccines. The section on adverse events has been expanded. A chapter on communications with information about recommended web sites has also been added.

Highlights of some major changes in the Guide are as follows:

  • varicella vaccine use during an outbreak and in health care workers;
  • pneumococcal conjugate vaccine to prevent severe infection in children;
  • meningococcal conjugate vaccine to help contain this feared disease;
  • Lyme disease vaccine with limited use but helpful for those visiting endemic areas;
  • the use of hepatitis A vaccine in outbreak management;
  • the use of acellular pertussis vaccines for adolescents;
  • internet sites of interest;
  • talking with patients about immunization.

Changes in the Guide mirror the extraordinary pace of change in the immunization field. This pace has been challenging for members of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), who worked for many hours to keep producing new statements while revising the Guide itself. I gratefully acknowledge the hard work and expert contributions of members of NACI, the Immunization and Respiratory Infections Division and other Centre for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control staff as well as the staff of the Biologics and Genetic Therapies Directorate. Important contributions were made by liaison members from the Canadian Association for Immunization Research and Evaluation, the Canadian Infectious Disease Society, the Canadian Paediatric Society, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Committee to Advise on Tropical Medicine and Travel, the Canadian Public Health Association, the Community and Hospital Infection Control Association, the Council of Chief Medical Officers of Health, National Defence and the National Immunization Programs, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United States Public Health Service. Close liaison with the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has been invaluable.

Thanks go to the Groupe sur l'acte vaccinal (immunization standards group), Montreal, for its review of the French version of the Guide, to Dr. Stan Acres for his invaluable help in finalizing the document, and to Scientific Publication and Multimedia Services, Health Canada, for production.

Victor J.H. Marchessault
Chairman (1998 - )
National Advisory Committee on Immunization
