Notifiable Diseases Section

Mandate

The goal of the Notifiable Diseases Section is to help reduce the incidence of infectious diseases in Canada by monitoring and reporting notifiable and other specified infectious diseases; providing up-to-date information on infectious diseases to various levels of government, public officials and special advisory committees including the Advisory Committee on Epidemiology (ACE) in order to assist them in developing and improving surveillance and control policies.

Objectives

  • Maintenance of an aggregate database of reports of notifiable diseases submitted by the provinces and territories together with preparation of monthly provisional reports and the preparation of an annual summary.
  • Maintenance and development of a case-by-case database of reports of notifiable diseases submitted by the provinces/territories.
  • Analysis of data from aggregate and case-by-case databases and production of reports is done in collaboration with other divisions in the Bureau.
  • To maintain the mechanism for the active surveillance of specific paediatric diseases/conditions in Canada.
