CHIRPP News
Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program

Welcome to CHIRPP News

CHIRPP News is the newsletter of the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRPP). It is intended for participants in the program, those who use the data, and professionals involved in child safety and injury prevention. Its aim is to inform interested parties about developments at or involving CHIRPP. It is published three times a year.

CHIRPP, established in 1990, is a computerized information system that collects and analyzes data on injuries to people (mainly children) who are seen at the emergency rooms of the 10 pediatric hospitals and five general hospitals in Canada participating in CHIRPP. CHIRPP collects data on all of the circumstances leading up to an injury, the nature of the injury, and the age and sex of the injured person.

The aim of CHIRPP is to contribute to the reduction in the number and severity of injuries in Canada. The information gleaned from thousands of records permits researchers to observe patterns of injury occurrence and thus to identify hazards and high-risk situations. This makes the setting of priorities and the development and evaluation of targeted injury prevention programs possible.

CHIRPP is a program of the Injury Section, Division of Health Surveillance and Epidemiology, part of the Centre for Healthy Human Development, a directorate of the Public Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada.
