National Mature Media Awards 2006 WinnerThe Division of Aging and Seniors is proud to announce that it is a winner in the 15th annual Mature Media Awards Program. Of the 1,200 entries received from Canada and the United States, the Division's Safe Living Guide: A guide to home safety for seniors received the Silver Award in the Government Publications category in recognition of its excellence of design, content, creativity and relevance to the senior market.

The Mature Media Awards Program, presented by the Mature Market Resource Center -- an American clearinghouse for the seniors market -- recognizes the finest in advertising, marketing and educational materials designed and produced for older adults. Older people face increasing challenges due to the sensory and other changes that age brings. In an age-friendly community, policies, services and structures related to the physical and social environment are designed to support and enable older people to "age actively" -- that is, to live in security, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in society.

This brochure was produced by the World Health Organization in collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Ministry of Health of British Columbia and 2010 Legacies Now.

The day is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action which recognizes the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. Throughout the world, abuse and neglect of older persons is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem. Research indicates that public education campaigns like World Elder Abuse Awareness Day new window (WEAAD) are vital for informing people in a growing number of countries about elder abuse and active involvement of the media is central to its success.

The National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE), a new national network of community practitioners and researchers who specialize in gerontology, will officially be launched on June 14. NICE, a New Initiative Network funded by the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE), is intended to encourage the transfer of knowledge of best practices for the care of the elderly, and is the first network of its kind in Canada. Seniors Month is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize Canadian seniors for their contributions in making Canada what it is today -- vibrant and prosperous. Today's seniors live longer and healthier lives, they contribute to Canada's social and economic well-being, and they are necessary and active participants in Canadian society and culture.
