Government of Canada releases new and updated Seniors Guide on Federal Programs and Services

OTTAWA - The Government of Canada today released the 2000 edition of the Next link will open in a new window Seniors Guide to Federal Programs and Services. The publication provides seniors, their families and those who work with seniors up-to-date information on a wide range of federal programs and services of benefit to them.

"I am very pleased to release the latest version of this useful and informative guide," said Health Minister and Minister Responsible for Seniors Allan Rock. "The Government of Canada is committed to the health and well-being of our seniors population and I believe this guide plays a key role in keeping seniors informed about how they can access and benefit from Government programs and services."

The Seniors Guide covers a number of important areas, including:

  • health and fitness
  • pensions and income security
  • veterans affairs
  • safety and security
  • taxation
  • human rights and legal issues
  • housing
  • disabilities
  • consumer services

Over 25 federal departments and agencies provide programs and services of benefit to seniors.

"Veterans represent almost 11% of Canada's senior population and more than 22% of Canada's male senior population. We anticipate that the new edition of the Seniors Guide will be a valuable information tool for them, their families and their caregivers. We're particularly pleased that this guide will be available through the Internet as our pilot studies indicate that a growing number of veterans are actively surfing the World Wide Web for information about programs and services they can access nationally and within their community," said the Honourable George Baker, Minister of Veterans Affairs.

The Government of Canada has been publishing The Seniors Guide for over a decade and it has proven to be one of the Government's most popular publications. This is the 7th edition of the guide.

A copy of the guide is available by calling Health Canada at (613) 954-5995 or (613) 952-7606.
