The Four Components

This component recognizes the strong impact that diabetes has on Aboriginal peoples. Not only are their diabetes rates dramatically higher than in the general population, but type 2 diabetes -- once virtually unheard of in individuals under the age of 45 -- has begun to surface among young children in many Aboriginal communities. Funding is intended to cover care and treatment costs for Aboriginals living on reserve or in communities, and to support prevention/health promotion activities for Aboriginal people throughout the country, including Metis and individuals living off reserve. The work of this component is proceeding in close consultation with the Aboriginal community, and all activities will be undertaken in league with national level Aboriginal representative organizations.
