Ministerial Advisory Council on Rural Health
Up to one-third of Canadians live in rural, remote, isolated or northern areas of the country. They face unique health challenges, yet share many health concerns with their urban counterparts. The Ministerial Advisory Council on Rural Health was established in 2001 to provide advice to the Minister of Health on how the Government of Canada can help improve the health of rural communities and individuals. The Council has 22 members who come from across Canada and represent a broad range of disciplines (e.g., rural health care professionals, researchers, etc.) and interests (e.g. health care system, health promotion and prevention, population health, etc.). The Council held its first meeting on October 26-27, 2001. Four priorities were identified, including Health Human Resources, Building Healthy Communities, Health Information Technology, and Aboriginal Health.
