Infectious Diseases News Brief

April 28, 2006

Tuberculosis: Manitoba (Update)
As of 21 April 2006, this TB cluster includes 20 cases with active tuberculosis. Officials are also following up with staff and regular customers at a Winnipeg restaurant to identify individuals who may have had close contact with the source case and any possible subsequent cases. At this time, the risk to the public remains low. Manitoba Health continues to work with Health Canada's First Nations Inuit Health Branch and Four Arrows Health Authority to manage the investigation.

Measles: British Columbia
Interior Health-Public Health officials has confirmed two cases of measles in a 3 year-old unimmunized child and a 45 year-old male in the Vernon Area. Since this man had not travelled outside of the Vernon area prior to his illness, Public Health officials suspect that more cases may emerge among non or under-immunized susceptible persons who were exposed to either of these two people or to other as yet unidentified cases. A recent review of Interior Health immunization rates for Vernon show that for preschoolers aged 1-5 years old, only 70% had the recommended 2 doses of measles vaccine (MMR); 12% had no MMR, and the other 18% had only one MMR. The 70% full immunization rate is below rates achieved in other area in Interior Health and the province. This represents a non-immunized and under-immunized group of approximately 660 preschool children over the age of one, potentially susceptible to catching measles if exposed. Public Health will continue to investigate and follow-up with people identified as having been possibly exposed to either of these two lab confirmed cases.
