2006 in review: Africa works to solve health problems
26 December 2006 -- During 2006, there was evidence that Africa is coming up with its own solutions to reduce disease and mortality. For example, farmers in Tanzania are profitably cultivating Artemisia annua. The plant's extract is used to produce the artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) for malaria treatment. Across sub-Saharan Africa malaria kills as many as 3000 young children each day.
