CHIRPP centres receive research funds

CHIRPP's Local Research Support Project was initiated to encourage the use of local data by staff at the participating centres, while fostering collaboration with local researchers and among CHIRPP centres.

In the summer of 1995, CHIRPP centres were invited by the Ottawa office to submit proposals for the following kinds of projects:

  • research in which CHIRPP data from one or more centres would be analyzed, especially if the analysis would meet local needs;
  • development of software or procedures that would facilitate use of CHIRPP data; and
  • development of a research proposal that would use CHIRPP data, which would be submitted to a major funding organization.

Since the total amount of money available was $40,000, and since projects had to be completed by the end of the fiscal year, centres were advised to limit their proposals to modest projects costing approximately $5,000 each.

Three people served on the committee that reviewed the proposals: Rob Brison, a CHIRPP Director; Mary Chipman, a member of CHIRPP's Consultative Committee on Injury Surveillance and Control; and Susan Mackenzie, CHIRPP's Senior Epidemiologist. The committee approved three of the four proposals it received. These were proposals to:

  • develop a grant application for a study of sledding injuries in Eastern Ontario children, submitted by Martin Osmond of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario;
  • develop a comprehensive injury morbidity and mortality profile in the Sioux Lookout Zone for 1992-1995, submitted by Sara Whitehead, Beth Henning, Jill Johnston and Arnold Devlin of the Sioux Lookout Zone Hospital; and
  • conduct a feasibility study for a study of injuries associated with bicycling at Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus, submitted by Jasline Flores, Pierre Maurice and Paul-Marie Bernard of the Centre de santé publique de Québec.

Staff in the Ottawa CHIRPP office are looking forward to seeing the results of these projects this spring and hope to have another competition in the coming year. To avoid last-minute panic, we encourage CHIRPP centres and their potential collaborators to start thinking now about future Local Research Support Project proposals.
