Notes

  • Distribution of age and sex in all categories was fairly even.  Males were slightly higher than 50% from ages 1-10 and dropped to 40% for ages 11-12.
  • The door closing on a body part accounted for nearly half the injuries (44.7%), and tripping or falling into the door accounted for close to one-quarter (22.4%) of the  injuries.
  • In almost three-quarters (72.6%) of the cases, contact with the frame or track of the door was involved in the injury, either as a direct cause or as a contributing factor.
  • Nearly half (48.0%) of the injuries were to the hands and fingers and one-third (33.0%) were to the head, face and neck.
  • For 61 cases involving broken glass, 5 were admitted to hospital and 36 required medical follow-up after release from the emergency department. This 8.2% for hospital admissions is higher than the CHIRPP database average of 5.7%.
