Message from Minister Ujjal Dosanjh on National Day Against Homophobia

As Minister of Health, I wish to join all Canadians in recognizing this National Day Against Homophobia. In marking this annual event, I would like to focus attention on the health issues that develop as a result of this stigma.

Homophobia contributes to higher rates of depression, substance abuse, physical violence and suicide among gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered people.

The government of Canada recognizes the value and dignity of all Canadians. We believe that all people have the right to a life free from discrimination and violence. So we call on Canadians to challenge homophobia both in their personal lives and in their workplaces.

Our country must become free from homophobia to ensure those who are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered are not marginalized. Like racism, homophobia has no place in Canada.

Ujjal Dosanjh
Minister of Health
