Minister announces Expert Advisory Committee on Children

OTTAWA - Health Minister Allan Rock today announced the members of the new Interim National Expert Advisory Committee who will provide advice and assistance on the development of the federal government's Centres of Excellence for Children's Well-Being. The Committee held its inaugural meeting on February 8 and 9, 1999 in Ottawa.

The development of the Centres of Excellence is part of the federal government's contribution to the National Children's Agenda. The Centres, announced in the September 1997 Speech from the Throne, will contribute to federal leadership in knowledge generation and dissemination on children's issues. It will ensure that advanced knowledge is disseminated more broadly among families, community-based organizations, educators, health professionals, and government decision-makers and improve our understanding of children and what they need to develop in healthy ways.

"The government of Canada is deeply committed to the health and well-being of Canada's children," said the Minister. "The work of this Committee will assist us in our efforts to make a positive impact in their lives."

Chosen from a list of more than 200 nominations provided by stakeholders across the country, the members of this Committee bring a broad base of expert knowledge on a number of important children's issues. With expertise in areas such as health, education, academic and community work, and representing all regions of Canada, their contributions will provide valuable guidance as the Centres of Excellence are developed.

The role of the Centres of Excellence Interim National Expert Advisory Committee will include guiding the selection of issues for the work of Centres as well as the process for the selection of sponsors.
