Beginning November 1997, the Communicable Disease Control Unit
initiated a series of continuing education sessions on sexually
transmitted diseases (STD) involving the public health community and
to a large extent the wider community of stakeholders in the
province. The purpose of these sessions was to present and
discuss current thinking on STD epidemiology, prevention, care and
support, with a view to reviewing current STD control efforts in
Manitoba. Seven sessions have been held including the following
topics:
- Current concepts in STD epidemiology with an update on the
epidemiology of STDs in Manitoba.
- STD prevention, care and support programs and activities in
Manitoba.
- Laboratory testing and treatment strategies for the bacterial
STDs.
- The viral sexually transmitted diseases (1): herpes simplex virus
(HSV) and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections.
- The viral sexually transmitted diseases (2): hepatitis B,
hepatitis C and HIV.
- Issues in STD prevention and management.
- Developing phase-specific STD control strategies.
March 2001 - As follow-up to the development of the provincial
STD control strategy, the CDC Unit has organized several collaborative
follow-up workshops with key stakeholders from Regional Health
Authorities and jurisdictions with the greatest STD burdens. The
purpose of these workshops is to discuss;
- the recent increasing trends in STD incidence, including the
populations and geographic areas at highest risk.
- STD prevention and health promotion strategies, and
- current laboratory testing policies and STD treatment
guidelines.
Future workshops are scheduled to review progress and discuss
future work plans and activities in more detail.
