Provincial STD Control Strategy

click here to view the reportBeginning November 1997, the Communicable Disease Control Unit initiated a series of continuing education sessions on sexually transmitted diseases (STD) involving the public health community and to a large extent the wider community of stakeholders in the province.  The purpose of these sessions was to present and discuss current thinking on STD epidemiology, prevention, care and support, with a view to reviewing current STD control efforts in Manitoba.  Seven sessions have been held including the following topics:

  1. Current concepts in STD epidemiology with an update on the epidemiology of STDs in Manitoba.
  2. STD prevention, care and support programs and activities in Manitoba.
  3. Laboratory testing and treatment strategies for the bacterial STDs.
  4. The viral sexually transmitted diseases (1): herpes simplex virus (HSV) and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections.
  5. The viral sexually transmitted diseases (2): hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
  6. Issues in STD prevention and management.
  7. Developing phase-specific STD control strategies.

March 2001 - As follow-up to the development of the provincial STD control strategy, the CDC Unit has organized several collaborative follow-up workshops with key stakeholders from Regional Health Authorities and jurisdictions with the greatest STD burdens.  The purpose of these workshops is to discuss;

  • the recent increasing trends in STD incidence, including the populations and geographic areas at highest risk.
  • STD prevention and health promotion strategies, and
  • current laboratory testing policies and STD treatment guidelines.

Future workshops are scheduled to review progress and discuss future work plans and activities in more detail.
