CHIRPP News
Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program
Issue 15
November 1998

Our apologies ...

In CHIRPP News, Issue 14, we incorrectly spelled the name of a contributing author, Mr. Gary Catlin, Director, Health Statistics Division, Statistics Canada.

ICE Report Available

The International Collaborative Effort on Injury Statistics has published its International Comparative Analysis of Injury Mortality. The report investigates international differences in injury mortality rates among 11 of the countries participating in the ICE on Injury Statistics. Copies are available at: http://www.cdc.gov/nchswww/products/pubs/pubd/ad/301-310/301-310.htm (then choose report No. 303).

Staff Changes at CHIRPP

After two years working with the Child Injury Division, Janet Brown is leaving to join the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). During her time with us, Janet contributed several information pieces to CHIRPP News, she prepared many of the injury reports posted on our web site (http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/injury-bles/), and she made a special contribution to the analysis, interpretation and reporting of the Dog Bite Study. Janet also completed her thesis and was awarded her master's degree in epidemiology from U of T last year.

We will miss you Janet, and we wish you all the best in your new position!

What's New ....

Congratulations! As of July, 1998 Kingston has more than 100,000 records in the cumulative CHIRPP database. The only other centre to do so is the Montreal Children's Hospital. Keep up the good work!

ICECI Plans for February

At the Fourth World Conference on Injury Prevention and Control a draft document titled International Classification for External Causes of Injuries (ICECI) - Guidelines for counting and classifying external causes of injury for prevention and control was presented to the World Health Organization. The document is presently being revised in the light of comments received since the conference and the next version should be ready in February. Following review of the February version a field test is planned in which data on injured patients presenting to emergency rooms will be gathered using the ICECI and guidelines. If readers of CHIRPP News are able to contribute to the next phase of the evaluation, either by reviewing part of the classification scheme for face validity or by providing a field test site, the help would be greatly appreciated. To volunteer, or for more information, please e-mail Susan Mackenzie at susan_mackenzie@hc-sc.gc.ca.
