Eligible deposits held in your Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs) with a CDIC member institution are insured separately from your non-registered deposits with the same member.
Your eligible RRIF deposits are also insured separately from eligible deposits you may hold in a RRSP with the same member. The maximum protection for your eligible RRIF deposits at each CDIC member is $100,000, including principal and interest.
If your self-directed RRIF includes eligible deposits with CDIC members, deposit insurance applies in the same way as it applies to deposits within a self-directed RRSP.
CDIC does not distinguish between self-directed plans and other registered plans. Therefore, the maximum deposit insurance for all eligible deposits held in RRIFs with the same member institution, including those held in a self-directed plan, is $100,000 (principal and interest combined).
The trustee of your self-directed RRIF is not required to be a CDIC member for deposit insurance to apply to your deposits as long as the deposits are placed at CDIC members.
