Canadian navy conducts exercise in local waters

ESQUIMALT, B.C. – Three Canadian naval ships, supported by CH-124 Sea King helicopters and CP-140 Aurora long range patrol aircraft will be conducting a naval task group exercise in the Nanoose Bay torpedo firing range and off the West Coast of Vancouver Island from July 18 to 29.

Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships Protecteur, Algonquin and Calgary will take part in the exercise aimed to provide training at the individual, unit and task group levels involving torpedo firing, replenishments at sea, towing, multi-ship coordinated anti-submarine exercises, simulated search and rescue operations, force protection training, small arms firing and navigation training in confined waters.

Having the navy operate in coastal waters provides an increased level of security services to Canadians, through surveillance and support to other government departments.  The navy maintains a comprehensive picture of activities in our coastal waters and collaborates with the appropriate agencies to enable the Government of Canada to respond to illegal activity and to protect lives and property.

It is due to the high degree of training conducted by the Canadian Navy during these types of exercises, and the sophisticated equipment on board the navy’s warships that other nations, including the United States, are willing to entrust their forces to the operational command of Canadian Commodores, as demonstrated during real world operations like Operation Apollo.

During this exercise a handover between Rear Admiral Roger Girouard and the new Commander of Canadian Fleet Pacific, Commodore Bruce Donaldson will take place at sea.
