Canada Plays Key Role in NATO Exercise

HMCS Athabaskan will participate in the NATO maritime exercise Brilliant Mariner March 24 until April 6, 2006.

Designed to certify NATO Response Force 7, Brilliant Mariner will be held in the North Sea and waters adjacent to Denmark. In total, sixty four ships from eighteen countries will be participating, conducting joint warfare inter-operability training in a multi-threat environment.  The various ships will also be operating with maritime air assets from eight countries as well as several specialist units to provide realistic training for a variety of scenarios including counter-terrorism operations, maritime interdiction, non-combatant evacuation, and mine counter measures operations.

HMCS Athabaskan is currently the flagship for the Standing NATO Response Force Maritime Group 1 fleet (SNMG1). http://www.manw.nato.int/snmg1

SNMG1 is one of four rapid-reaction sea-going units of the NATO Response Force. NATO Response Forces are fully integrated combined land, sea and air forces able to respond to a wide variety of operational commitments and missions anywhere in the world.

Exercise Brilliant Mariner is the final preparation phase before the land, air and maritime components of the NATO Response Force come together in June for the capability demonstration exercise Steadfast Jaguar 2006 in Cape Verde, off the west coast of Africa.
