Background Summaries

Summary: Operation ALTAIR (Oct. 2003-present)

Operation ALTAIR is the continuing Canadian Forces maritime contribution to the U.S.-led coalition campaign against terrorism known as Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Operation ALTAIR consists of six-month ship deployments; ships often seamlessly integrate into US task groups operating in the area. Due to operational requirements elsewhere, there may be periods when there is no Canadian maritime contribution.

Canadian ships have included HMCS Winnipeg and Toronto. While in theatre, our ships conduct surveillance patrols and maritime interdiction operations in order to control sea-based activity in the region.

“Ultimately, the ship looks for information that establishes links between illicit activity and terrorist groups, such as Al-Qaida,” said Lieutenant (N) Catherine Sands, a Unit Information Officer who served onboard Winnipeg while deployed on Operation ALTAIR. This operation follows Operation APOLLO, a more intensive military contribution to the Gulf region following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S.
